About
Heather Lee McLelland
Born in Seoul, Korea, I grew up in Montclair, Virginia. In 2002, I received my BA from Elon University in Psychology with a minor in Art, in pursuit of Art Therapy. As I continued this journey, I furthered my education at UNC at Wilmington, where my interest in wood fired ceramics started and never left. I participated in numerous workshops and served as an apprentice in Cromarty, Scotland in 2011. My professional experiences include teaching and serving as a studio technician at several institutions in North Carolina as well as a professional studio potter.
In 2017, I started my path towards a Masters of Fine Arts at East Carolina University. I now teach ceramics at UNCW. Currently, my work is inspired from the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh and Peter Kropotkin’s Mutual Aid Theory and creating work that can go beyond the initial function. I contemplate form, time, and place to see how pottery can participate in a community, a group of people, or a place.
