Our Background

HEATHER LEE MCLELLAND

Heather Lee McLelland is a maker based in Cary, North Carolina. She recently moved from Wilmington, NC, where she found her deep connection to working with clay and fire beginning in 2006. Heather is constantly being influenced from her surroundings and the state of being she is in. She is not limited to working with clay but is starting to explore interdisciplinary actions across many media and spaces. She keeps her family and the readings and teaching of Thich Nhat Hanh and Peter Kropotkin's Mutual Aid Theory at the core of her work. She strives to find ways in which people can work together to explore and find their best selves by teaching and participating in community spaces.

Born in Seoul, Korea, Heather grew up in the suburbs of Washington, DC. In 2002, she received her BA in Psychology with a minor in Art at Elon University. Post graduation, she did some traveling and eventually moved to Wilmington, NC, to continue her education at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW). Between post bac and grad school, Heather did an apprenticeship in Cromarty, Scotland and winter residency at Penland School of Craft. In 2020, she received her Master of Arts in Ceramics at East Carolina University. Currently, she teaches a range of classes, from Foundations in 2D Art and Ceramics, including hand building, throwing, ceramic sculpture, and clay and glaze chemistry, at UNCW.
