FIRING...

Firing with wood is one of the oldest methods of firing pots. It is also the oldest way of cooking. Making wares to cook and store food and beverages came out of necessity.  As cultures have advanced and changed, so have our methods of firing and preparation.  We now have the convenience of speed, readiness, and choices. With these advancements, I still feel rooted in the methods that allow me to take time and be a part of the process. My most favorite way to finish my work is through wood firing. This allows me to make more choices for myself in the stacking and firing process, but also allow room for the dancing of the flame and heat around the work to help create interesting and unique surfaces. Reduction down cooling can create deep shades of reds, purples and grays, depending on the clay body.

I have been fortunate to fire with East Carolina University, Rice Branch Studios, and Dick Heiser (these images are taken from those places). The openness and kindness of these communities have allowed me to learn and hone in different wood firing techniques.
